 Calvary's newly-appointed boys' head basketball coach Chris Thompson is excited about picking up his long-time friend and coaching buddy Patrick Williams as his assistant coach for the Cavaliers."Patrick and I have been in basketball together 10 years and have the same expectations and philosophy about the game," Thompson said. Regarding his new assistant, Thompson says they communicate well together and each of them knows where the other is going as far as basketball is concerned. Though the new basketball coaching tandem can't get together with their players before October, Thompson said that he has seen them hanging around in the gym and shooting on their own. "Coach (Matt) Merry has been working with them in the weight room all summer and they should be in good shape come October," Thompson explained. "We have a lot of work to do, but one of the main things I want to work on is the players getting to know one another and to get a better feel for each other on the court." Thompson said that he has a core of good players who should be ready to go at the beginning of the season and feels the team will probably really come together by mid-January. As far as an offensive style, Thompson says he likes to run and be aggressive, but will not be afraid to work the half court when necessary. "Now we have some shooters, Thompson explained." If people play zone on us, we are going to be able to shoot out of it and that's a plus for us." Right now Thompson has four tournaments lined up and is hoping to get one more which would give him the maximum number allowed by the LHSAA. Thompson said that he is still interested in picking up some more players for the team and knows there are a few still hanging around on campus weighing their options about hitting the hard court.
