(photo courtesy www.mybigshots.com) ------------------------------------------------------ Calvary and Farmerville both live and die by the field goal. The last time the Farmers and Cavaliers met, Luke Nicholls kicked a field goal in overtime to eliminate Farmerville from the state playoffs. As fate would have it, the Cavaliers would taste some of their own medicine in 2009. The Farmers never even attempted a kick for an extra point, opting to go for two following each of their touchdowns. Senior Alex Lavelle kicked knuckle balls to the Cavaliers all night long, but he split the same uprights Nicholls did back in November for a 28-yard field goal to hand the Cavaliers a 31-29 season-opening loss with one second left on the clock. Calvary put points on the board before most of the Cavalier fans took their seats in the visitors' side of the stadium, when Ira Jewitt returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Nicholls put Calvary on top 7-0 with his kick for the PAT. Farmerville responded quickly with a 63-yard bomb from senior quarterback Caleb Kelley to junior Carl Pearson, but the Farmers' 2-point try was no good giving the Cavaliers a slim lead with 8:03 remaining in the first period of play. Calvary's sophomore 1-2-punch tandem of quarterback Nik McCarty and Brandon Wilson provided most of the offensive fireworks for the Cavaliers with Wilson taking a handoff from McCarty from 17 yards out to extend the Calvary lead to 14-6 with 4:53 remaining in the first quarter. Farmerville closed out the scoring in the initial stanza when Shannon Ward busted loose for a 7-yard touchdown, after an 80-yard drive taking seven plays. The 2-point PAT was denied by the Cavaliers however. Calvary stopped a Farmer drive inside the Cavalier 2-yard line, but that field position would come back to haunt the visitors when Wilson was thrown for a loss back inside the endzone for a safety tying the game at 14-14. Following the Calvary kickoff, Depaul Elliot appeared to return the ball all the way for a 73-yard touchdown, but the game officials brought the ball back to just inside the Cavalier 30 yard line and made the Farmers earn their next touchdown. Kelley connected with Jarvis Cooke on a 29-yard bullet to give Farmerville their first lead of the contest with 9:50 left before intermission. Again, the sophomore tandem of McCarty-to-Wilson performed their magic on a 76-yard scoring pass to tie the game once again at 22-all. Senior Keontae Fields scored the only Farmerville touchdown of the second half on a 29-yard run with 5:21 left in the third period giving the Farmers a 6-point lead for less than two minutes. McCarty dialed his own number capitalizing on a 66-yard drive on six plays, when he ran the ball in from seven yards out. Nicholls connected for the go-ahead point to give the Cavaliers a 29-28 lead. Farmerville faced a fourth down with time about to expire before calling their final time out and deciding to go with Lavelle's foot for the win. There was no argument about the accuracy of Lavelle's kick as it tumbled end-over-end over the cross bar with plenty of distance to spare. The loss marked the first-time ever that Calvary dropped a season-opener since the revival of their football program back in 2004. |
