(photo courtesy mybigshots.com) Austin Wheeler booted a 27-yard field goal in overtime to give the Airline Vikings a 17-14 win over a group of young, upstart Calvary Cavaliers Friday night in a repeat of the climax of last week's game in Farmerville. Calvary fell behind early in the game when the Vikings scored on a Connor Nichols pass to John Thomas from 11 yards out following a 10-play, 55-yard drive. That was the only score in the first half with Airline going to the locker room up by 7-0. Calvary sophomore quarterback Nik McCarty found fellow-sophomore Brandon Wilson from 23 yards out for the first Cavalier touchdown capping a 62-yard drive consisting of eight plays. Luke Nicholls was good on the extra point kick to tie the score. Wilson scored again in the fourth period with 7:00 remaining when he scampered 57 yards to paydirt on the first play of a drive to give the Cavaliers a 14-7 lead and what appeared to be a back-breaker for the win. However, halfback Albert Robinson became the leading passer for the Vikings on his only toss when he fired a 67-yard scoring strike to Michael Bell silencing the Cavalier side of the field. When the final whistle blew, the teams were tied at 14-all and headed toward overtime. Calvary got the ball and called on Wilson who picked up good yardage on a first down at the Viking 10-yard line. A high snap sailed over McCarty's head on the next play and Airline pounced on top of the ball to take possession. Calvary's stingy defense stopped the Vikings on three consecutive plays, sacking Nichols for a big loss at the 17 yard line setting up Wheelers game-winning kick. To say the game was close would be an understatement. Not only were the teams tied at 14-14, but the statistics were almost identical. Airline average 3.1 yards-per-carry, while the Cavaliers managed 3.8 in the same department. The Vikings had 247 total yards of offense, with Calvary ending the night with 233. Perhaps the biggest difference maker was the turnover ratio with Airline recovering all four of its fumbles while the Cavaliers lost the ball both times they fumbled. Both quarterbacks were picked off once. Wilson was the game's leading rusher with 21 carries for 113 yards. McCarty completed 18-of-30 passes for 117 yards. Jonathan Shepherd led all Cavalier receivers with 11 snags for 74 yards. Cody Bordelon was in on five receptions for 22 yards for Calvary. Airline's Nichols completed on three passes of his 13 attempts for 31 yards. Reggie Jackson was the leading ground-gainer for the Vikings with 73 yards in his 16 carries. In a testament to the toughness of the Calvary defense, last week Airline had three players rush for at least 80 yards. The Cavaliers only allowed two Vikings to rush for more than 50 yards. Calvary will try to pick up their first win of the season next Friday night at home when undefeated Green Oaks comes to Jerry Barker Stadium for game three of the season. |
