Calvary picked up its first win of the season with an impressive 49-8 win over the previously unbeaten Green Oaks Giants at Jerry Barker Stadium Friday night. The win marked the first career coaching win for new Cavalier head coach Bo Meeks, and they did it without leading rusher Brandon Wilson who left the game on the second play of the night with an undetermined injury. Ira Jewitt was instrumental in setting up a pair of touchdowns for the Cavaliers with his punt returns. His first return to the Giant 15 yard line led to a Nik McCarty quarterback keeper for the initial score of the game. McCarty punched it in from four yards out on the fourth play of the drive. Calvary fans witnessed what appeared to be two touchdowns taken away by game officials. The first was a fumble recovery in the endzone which was counted as a touchback instead of six points for the Cavaliers. The officials ruled the Green Oaks player never had possession on the punted ball, thus no score was allowed. The second touchdown denied by the officials came when McCarty faked everybody out on what appeared to be a handoff to Calvin Moody. Moody was tackled just across the line of scrimmage, but McCarty had the ball and ran untouched into the endzone. By rule, an early whistle by the officials means the ball is dead whether intentionally blown or not. Calvary didn't need the two apparent touchdowns after all and cruised through the game for the lopsided win. McCarty found James Scroggins on a 31-yard scoring strike to give the Cavaliers a 14-0 lead after a 61-yard, 7-play drive with 2:51 remaining in the first period. Luke Nicholls was good on all kicks for extra points in the game for Calvary. Defensively, Tate Martin stepped up with several stops of Giant star running back Toney Davenport and Chris Adcock over-stayed his welcome in the Green Oaks backfield all night long. Freshman Weston Steelhammer intercepted Green Oak's quarterback Chris Williams twice, once for a 25-yard touchdown. Another pick by Steelhammer was called back due to a penalty by the Cavaliers who were guilty of a personal foul. Jewitt was guilty of theft himself when he intercepted a Williams pass and returned it 76 yards for another Cavalier touchdown. Freshman Calvin Moody, coming in for the injured Wilson, burst through the Giant defensive line and scampered 67 yards for a score in the third quarter on the second play of a series for Calvary with 2:41 remaining in the third quarter. Moody had already brought in a McCarty reception and raced 30 yard to paydirt in the second quarter. McCarty's final touchdown pass was to Nik LaLena from 48 yards out giving Calvary a 28-0 lead 2:37 left in the first half. The Green Oaks Giants finally broke the ice in the third quarter when Davenport rambled 53 yards for the only touchdown for the visiting team with 2:27 left in the third period. The try for two was good. From that point on, the younger Cavalier players got to see lots of action on the rainy night. McCarty ended his night hitting on 50 percent of his 16 passing attempts for 149 yards and three touchdowns. He did not throw an interception. Moody was both the leading rusher and receiver with a total of 140 yards combined. The Cavaliers will travel to Monroe next Friday to take on the Richwood Rams, a highly-regarded 3-A team ranked in the top 10 in their classification. Click for Photos |
