OCS won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff driving to a first-and-goal at the Cavalier five yard line. A bad snap over quarterback Paul Garner's head forced Coach Steven Fitzhugh to elect to go for a field goal which was wide to the left. The Cavaliers went to work from their own 20 and stalled at the Eagle 6-yard line. Luke Nicholls came in to give Calvary the lead for good with a 28-yard field goal giving the Cavaliers a 3-0 lead. Sophomore quarterback Nik McCarty hit James Scroggins from 31 yards out to increase the lead to 10-0 Calvary with 3:18 left in the opening period of play. The McCarty-to-Scroggins tandem struck again with 90 seconds remaining in the initial stanza from four yards out to put the Cavaliers up 17-0. With 7:23 remaining in the first half, Garner got the Eagles on the board when he hit Brice Gillikin with an 11-yard scoring strike. The extra point was blocked by the Cavaliers. When the ensuing Cavalier drive stalled at the Eagles' seven yard line, Nicholls was called upon again to work his magic with a 29-yard field goal. Garner found Matt Parker from the 21-yard line with a little over three minutes left in the first half for another throw for a score cutting into the Calvary lead. The teams left the field with the Cavaliers up by 20-12. Calvary took the second half kickoff and got out to the 21-yard line on the return, only to turn the ball over to the Eagles on a fumble. The Eagles used a little razzle-dazzle with a halfback pass from Braden Bristo to Brad Laird on the first play from scrimmage cutting the lead to 20-18 for Calvary. McCarty got the Cavaliers rolling on the next possession, taking eight plays to march 80 yards before hitting Scroggins again from 17 yards out to extend the Calvary lead to 27-18. Ouachita Christian struck again when Garner hit Parker from 12 yards out to close the Eagle deficit to 27-25. That, however, would be the last time the visitors from Monroe would taste the endzone. McCarty tossed a short pass to freshman Calvin Moody, who did his best shuck and jive move to elude would-be tacklers, to race 76 yards for a back-breaker touchdown with 3:36 left in the third frame. The game's only score in the fourth period came when Nik Lalena took a handoff from McCarty and ran untouched into the endzone from 12 yards out. Nicholls converted successfully on all his point-after attempts. Moody ended his night with 191 yards on the ground and added another 91 yards on the receiving end of the ball for the Cavaliers. Scroggins brought in five McCarty passes for 76 yards, with his longest being 31. Cody Bordelon returned to action with three catches for 42 yards. McCarty had a great night on the ground, picking up 95 yards in nine carries. He added 256 yards through the air, completing 17-of-27 passes for four touchdowns without an interception. Calvary had a season-high 29 first downs, while OCS ended the evening with 21. Garner completed 18 of his 38 passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns with one interception. The leading receiver for the Eagles was Mark Laird, who had a gaudy nine receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. Colby Webb and Colby Allen had 31 and 32 yards respectively for Ouachita Christian, the only two Eagles to end up with positive yards on the ground. The two teams put up 866 yards of offense in 127 plays, with Calvary gaining 538 of those yards in 63 tries. Calvary will travel to Springhill next Friday to open district competition, while OCS will play Delhi Charter. Click for Game Photos by www.mybigshots.com |
