Calvary had to dig down deep to overcome the injury bug and the mud in Springhill Friday night for a 20-6 district win over the Lumberjacks to extend their winning streak to four games.

The Cavaliers, who saw starting running back Brandon Wilson go down with a broken ankle three games ago, thought they had a replacement in freshman Calvin Moody. However, Moody had to be carried off the field on the Cavaliers' first possession with a bum knee.

Return artist and defensive back Ira Jewitt did not play after discovering his finger was broken and kicker Luke Nicholls didn't even make the trip due to an illness. Austin Nale blew out his knee three games ago.

Add to that the muddy field conditions and playing on the road and the deck was stacked against Calvary.

Enter the Cavalier defense to take up the slack. The muddy Calvary defense limited the Lumberjacks to a mere 96 yards of total offense and shut down star running back Charcandrick West, limiting him to only 15 yards in 11 carries.

Had it not been for Springhill quarterback D'marco Poindexter's 45-yard touchdown on a broken play, the numbers for the Lumberjacks would have been even worse.

The two teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first period, but quarterback Nik McCarty connected with Jonathan Shepherd from four yards out to erase the egg from the Cavalier side of the scoreboard. Backup kicker John Vizza booted the extra point to make it 7-0 with 9:53 remaining in the first half.

Poindexter then broke loose for his 45-yard score with 6:24 left in the first half, but the kick for the extra point was no good, giving the Cavaliers a slim 7-6 lead.

Calvary then added some insurance when McCarty hit James Scroggins for a 20-yard touchdown, but this time, Calvary's kick was no good.

Following a muddy, scoreless third quarter when the ball stayed inside Springhill territory the entire time, Calvary hit paydirt again with 3:17 left in the game when McCarty guided his troops 37 yards in seven plays calling his own number for a 5-yard touchdown. Vizza's kick was good making it 20-6 Cavaliers.

With the Calvary running attack thrown out of kilter by the loss of Moody, the Cavaliers had to depend upon the arm of McCarty, but the muddy conditions made it hard for him, and his receivers to hold on to the pigskin.

McCarty ended the night completing a dozen of his 30 passes for 127 yards with his two touchdowns without an interception. He contributed another 43 yards on the ground.

Andrew King took a while to get warmed up when he was called on to replace the injured Moody and closed out his night with 41 yards on 11 carries for Calvary.

Nik LaLena was the leading receiver for the Cavaliers coming up with four catches for 81 yards. Scroggins had 28 yards receiving, while Shepherd finished with 16 and Cody Bordelon was in for 12 on a pair of catches.

The Cavalier defense forced the Lumberjacks to go 3-and-out most of the game, allowing only one first down in the second half.

Calvary will hit the road again next week when the travel to Sibley to play the Lakeside Warriors.
