(photo courtesy mybigshots.com) Calvary improved its record to 5-2 overall and stayed perfect in district competition with a 56-0 victory over the Lakeside Warriors in Sibley Friday night. It was all over after the first Cavalier drive of 59 yards when Nik McCarty hit Jonathan Shepherd after eight plays giving Calvary a lead they would never lose early in the opening period of play. Calvary would go on to score four more touchdowns in the first period alone to race out to a 35-0 lead. The second quarter was more of the same as the Cavaliers scored on offense and defense with kicker John Vizza going perfect in all eight point-after-touchdown attempts. Eric Talley picked off a pass in the first period for a 26-yard touchdown and Kamen Muse ripped a ball from a Warrior's possession to sail untouched from 46 yards out for Calvary. McCarty would find James Scroggins on a 4-yard scoring strike and found Cody Bordelon on a 48-yard touchdown pass in the blow out. Andrew King punched the ball in from a yard out early in the second period to give the Cavaliers a 42-0 margin and back-up quarterback Cameron Burns came in for mop up duty scoring from five yards out. The second half was over in near-record time since game was then played with a running clock. Lakeside made things easy for the Cavaliers fumbling the ball eight times, losing four of them. Calvary freshman Garrett Williams set a school record with five solo tackles on kickoffs and almost had another when he reached off-balance to slow down a Warrior return artist. McCarty was perfect through the air completing all nine of his passes before Burns came in as his replacement. McCarty had 125 yards passing for four touchdowns without an interception. The Cavaliers got their 56 points with only 207 total yards of offense, while the Calvary defense stepped up allowing the Warriors 90 total yards and only five first downs. Lakeside quarterback Caleb Killian struggled with Cavalier defenders in his grill all night. He completed seven of his 23 passing attempts. Three ball carriers for the Warriors could only combine for a total of 36 yards, with Antaveous Stephens leading with 19 yards in seven touches. McCarty spread out his passes to six different receivers, while Burns was successful on both his passing attempts. Calvary will play a rare Thursday night game next week against Evangel at Jerry Barker Stadium. Tickets for the game will be $5 in advance beginning Monday and $6 at the gate game night. |
