Louisiana's No. 2-ranked Evangel Eagles and the No. 10-ranked Calvary Cavaliers were in a dogfight for more than half the game Thursday night, but the Eagles pulled away late to post a 41-12 district win at Jerry Barker Stadium.

The loss snapped Calvary's five-game win streak and extended the Eagles' win streak to seven games, with their only blemish being a 1-point loss to Arkansas power Shiloh Christian in the first game of the season.

Calvary forced the Eagles to go three-and-out on their first possession then used a flea-flicker pass of 60 yards from James Scroggins to Houston Tullos to set up the only Cavalier touchdown of the game.

Quarterback Nik McCarty took the ball in from a yard out with 9:18 to go in the opening quarter for 6-0 Cavalier lead. Luke Nicholls, coming back from a two-game absence misfired on his first point-after touchdown of the season.

Evangel's quarterback David Dee Duron fired the first of his six touchdowns in the game to Thomas Bridgewater from six yards out to knot the game at 6-all, but Will Russ gave the Eagles the lead for good with his extra point kick.

Duron would hit Bridgewater twice more before the final horn, the longest coming from 43 yards out.

Nicholls booted a 27-yard field goal in the second quarter to cut the Evangel lead to 13-9 and kicked another from 28 yards out in the third period making the score Evangel 20-12.

Duron would connect on another scoring pass to Judah Jones in the third period to give the Eagles a 27-12 lead.

The absence of Calvary's top two running backs posed a big problem for the Cavalier offense as they could only manage 27 yards on the ground with Brandon Wilson and Calvin Moody out for the season.

Duron added to the Eagles lead with two long touchdown passes in the final quarter to Bridgewater and Eric Thomas.

The Evangel quarterback threw for 335 yards, completing 25 of his 36 attempts. Duron scattered his receptions out among six different receivers with Thomas getting 192 yards with his 13 catches.

For Calvary, McCarty tossed 20 completions for 178 yards with one interception. Cody Bordelon made several critical catches in heavy traffic for 87 yards to lead Cavalier receivers.

Calvary will move on to host district foe Homer Friday, Oct. 30, in the final regular-season home game of the season. The Cavaliers wrap up their regular schedule with a trip to Vivian to play North Caddo on Nov. 6.
