(photo courtesy mybigshots.com) Calvary's defense limited Tony Casey to a mere 39 total yards rushing and returned two interceptions for touchdowns to help the Cavaliers roll to an easy 34-6 district win at Jerry Barker Stadium Friday night. Calvary took the opening kickoff and managed to get on the board with 9:55 left in the first period after a 7-play 40-yard drive when Chris Jones took the ball in from the two. Luke Nicholls made the score 7-0 with his extra point kick. The Cavaliers appeared to be in the driver's seat for another touchdown when they blocked a Homer punt, but had to settle for a 25-yard field goal by Nicholls at the 7:07 mark in the opening period. Calvary returned the favor when quarterback Nik McCarty fumbled the ball away to the Pelicans allowing Casey to score on a 26-yard run with 6:03 remaining in the second period. The extra point kick was no good. From that point on, it was pretty much all Calvary as McCarty found Jonathan Shepherd on a 30-yard scoring strike to put the Cavaliers up 17-6 at intermission. Shepherd's touchdown would be the last offensive touchdown of the game, but the Calvary defense tacked on touchdowns when Weston Steelhammer and Houston Tullos returned interceptions for scores. The only fourth quarter score came on a 37-yard field goal by Nicholls after the Cavaliers offense stalled with 7:15 left in the game. Casey, who came into the game with over 1800 yards rushing for the season in eight games, carried the ball 21 times for his 39-yard total. A big chunk of his yardage total was erased by a pair of sacks by the Calvary defense. Bo Williams was the Pelican's leading ground gainer, picking up 40 yards on 14 carries. Homer's dismal ground attack was better than that of the Cavaliers who ended their night with only 26 yards on the ground playing without Andrew King who was out with the flu. Through the air, McCarty was good on half of his 22 passes. His numbers would have been more impressive had several of his passes not been dropped after they fell from his receivers' hands. McCarty ended up with 167 yards with one interception. His completions were scattered among six separate receivers, with James Scroggins snagging four for 51 yards. Spencer Rolland, Shepherd and Nik LaLena all accounted for at least 30 yards apiece for the Cavaliers in receptions. Homer ended up with a total of 129 yards of offense on 52 plays while Calvary closed their regular-season home slate with 219 yards on 56 plays. Calvary drives failed to score twice due to fumbling the ball away to the Pelicans. The Cavaliers will close out the season next Friday in Vivian when the play the North Caddo Rebels. Homer will travel to Evangel for their regular-season finale next week. |
